What this place is
A hilltop townhouse, not a cabin in the woods
Watauga Lake has rental cabins. Most of them are rustic, at water level, and built in a different decade. The townhouse is something different — a modern, fully renovated two-bedroom up on the hill, with porches and a balcony pointed straight at the lake and the Cherokee National Forest beyond it.
It's quiet. It's clean. The shower has dual sinks. The jet tub is indoors, so it works in any weather without an hour of setup. The fire pit is gas — it lights instantly and your jacket doesn't smell like a campfire the next morning.
You're five minutes from the public boat launch and ten minutes from two real wineries. The Appalachian Trail crosses the dam fifteen minutes from the door.
Same view, four seasons
It's not the same trip twice
Guests who come once in October usually book again for July. The hill faces the lake in every season; what changes is the color, the light, and whether the maples are on fire.
Watauga Lake is a 6,430-acre reservoir tucked into the Cherokee National Forest in northeast Tennessee. The lake spans Carter and Johnson counties, runs 16 miles long, and reaches 265 feet at its deepest. Most of the shoreline is federally protected — which is why you can boat for an hour and pass mostly trees, not houses.
The town of Butler used to sit at the bottom of it. When the TVA closed Watauga Dam in 1948, the old town flooded and a new Butler was rebuilt on higher ground. Old Crow Medicine Show wrote a song about it. Locals will tell you the bell tower of the old courthouse is still visible from a boat in low water — that part's harder to confirm.
