Where: Watauga Lake shoreline + Roan Mountain + Cherokee National Forest
The single most-booked stretch of the year. Highest demand October 15–22, with Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain as the marquee viewpoint. Foliage peak shifts a week earlier in cold-September years and a week later in warm-September years.

Where: Bristol Motor Speedway · about an hour from Watauga Lake
NASCAR Cup Series race run under the lights. Bristol fills every hotel within 50 miles months in advance; the lake is a quieter alternative base. Three-night minimum stays on race weekends at most lake rentals.

The opening NASCAR Cup race of the year at Bristol. Cooler weather, smaller crowd than September, but still books up hotels for 50 miles. The lake is open inventory.

Where: Roan Mountain State Park · 30 minutes from Watauga Lake
Catawba rhododendrons on the open balds of Roan Mountain are world-famous. The festival itself runs a long weekend with crafts, music, and food. The bloom itself is the real draw — visible from Carvers Gap and the surrounding ridges, even outside festival weekend.

Watauga is a Bill Dance Signature Lake and hosts national-level bass tournaments. The Bassmaster College Classic Bracket ran here Sept 26–29, 2025. Tournaments fill lake rentals quickly; book accordingly.
