Skiing 35 minutes from Watauga Lake

Beech Mountain Resort (35 min) is the highest ski area in the eastern US. Sugar Mountain Resort (40 min) is the biggest in North Carolina. Both are an easy day from the lake.

Why the lake is a smart base for skiing

Boone and Banner Elk are the obvious places to stay if you’re driving in for a ski trip. They’re closer to the lifts and full of rental cabins built for the purpose. They’re also expensive in ski season and crowded.

Watauga Lake is 35 to 40 minutes from both ski areas, on roads that are maintained year-round. You pay a lot less per night, you stay in a townhouse with a real kitchen and a jet tub, and you ski the same mountain. The drive is the trade-off.

Most of our winter guests are doing this math on purpose. They want to ski two or three days, eat dinner somewhere quiet, and not pay slope-side rates for a place they won’t be in until dark anyway.

Beech Mountain Resort (35 minutes)

The smaller of the two but the higher. Beech sits at 5,506 feet at the summit — the highest ski area in the eastern United States. The peak gets weather that the lower mountains miss. When it’s raining at the lake, it’s often snowing at Beech.

The numbers:

  • 17 trails across 95 acres
  • Vertical drop: 830 feet
  • 7 lifts, including a high-speed quad
  • Night skiing five nights a week

Beech feels more alpine than most NC mountains because of the elevation. The summit lodge has a 360-degree view; on a clear day you can see the lake from up there if you know where to look.

The kids’ programs at Beech are solid. The bunny slopes are well-segregated from the main mountain.

Sugar Mountain Resort (40 minutes)

The bigger one. Sugar has the most terrain in North Carolina and the only double-black-diamond in the state. If you’ve been skiing long enough to take a real run seriously, Sugar is the better mountain.

The numbers:

  • 21 trails across 125 acres
  • Vertical drop: 1,200 feet — biggest in the southeast
  • 8 lifts
  • Snowboarding park
  • Tubing park (separate from the ski area)

Sugar runs longer than Beech most seasons because the lower elevations get more sun and the snowmaking has to work harder. They typically open mid-November and run through mid-March.

A typical ski day from the lake

7:30 AM: Coffee on the deck, watching the lake fog burn off. 8:15 AM: Out the door. US-321 west through Hampton, then NC-194 up the mountain. 9:00 AM: At the lifts. Buy tickets the night before online — it’s cheaper. 1:00 PM: Lunch at the lodge or in Banner Elk (Stonewalls is the go-to). 3:00 PM: Last run. 4:30 PM: Back at the townhouse. Jet tub on, fire pit lit, no driving for the rest of the night.

What winter at the lake itself is like

The lake doesn’t freeze (it’s too deep) but the air does, often. Winter mornings are sharp and clear, with mist rising off the water. The trees are bare, which means views you don’t see in summer — you can watch eagles from the deck without leaves in the way.

The townhouse is fully insulated with central heat and a gas fireplace in the living room. The jet tub is indoors. The fire pit on the back porch works in any weather. Winter is, for the right kind of trip, the best season at the lake.

Want this 5 minutes from where you're staying?

About this place

Is the snow real?

Mostly snowmaking. Beech and Sugar both have extensive snowmaking and can run a full mountain on cold nights. Natural snowfall happens — a few good dumps each winter — but you cannot count on it.

Which mountain should I pick?

Beech is higher and feels more alpine, with the highest summit elevation of any ski area east of the Rockies (5,506 ft). Sugar is bigger overall and has the only double-black-diamond run in North Carolina. If you're a beginner or intermediate, either works. If you're advanced, Sugar.

Can I do it as a day trip from the lake?

Easily. Leave at 8 AM, ski until 3, back at the townhouse by 4:30 with time for the jet tub. No need to book a slope-side hotel.

Is the drive bad in winter?

The drive from Watauga Lake to Beech and Sugar is on US-321 and NC-184. Both are maintained year-round, but they go up in elevation — ice and snow happen. AWD or 4WD helps. Don't drive a rear-wheel-drive sports car up here in January.

When is the season?

Typically opens mid-November (Beech can open earlier with cold nights), runs through early March. Best snow conditions are usually late January through mid-February.
