Stories from the lake

A couples' getaway at Watauga Lake

A short itinerary for a couple's weekend at Watauga Lake — quiet mornings, two wineries, dinner across the line in Banner Elk, and the jet tub after.

By Karen & Bill · May 2, 2026

About a third of our bookings are couples on a weekend without kids. Some are anniversaries. Some are “we needed this week.” Some are first trips together to test whether they like traveling together. (They usually do.)

This is the trip we’d plan for a couple coming in for two or three nights and wanting a real change of scene from whatever they came from.

What couples come for

A few specifics that come up in every couple’s review:

The jet tub in the queen suite. Indoor, private, year-round. Hot water with a view of the woods at night. It’s the thing that goes into the most photos.

The fire pit on the back porch. Gas, instant on. Couples sit out there with a bottle of wine after dinner, watch the stars, talk. We hear stories about engagements happening on that porch. (We’ve never asked anyone to verify.)

The bedroom balcony. The queen suite’s balcony looks straight at the lake. Morning coffee out there is the thing one partner brings up first in the review.

Quiet. The townhouse is up on a hill, away from the main road. There’s no traffic noise, no neighbors at your door, no resort sounds. The lake itself is quieter than most. You can hear yourself think.

A weekend that works

Here’s a Friday-arrival-to-Sunday-departure that we’d plan for our friends.

Friday

Late afternoon: arrive. Pick up wine or beer in Elizabethton on the drive in (there’s a real wine shop downtown). Self-check-in via keypad, no front-desk drama. Drop the bags, walk the deck, take it in.

Evening: stay in. First night is usually best at the house — you’ve been driving, you need a minute. Order pizza from Hampton (15 minutes) or cook something simple. Fire pit on the porch after dinner.

Saturday

Morning: easy. Coffee on the balcony. No alarm. Make breakfast at home — the kitchen has everything.

Late morning: short drive. Walk the Appalachian Trail from Shook Branch (15 min from the house). The flat section along the lake is gentle and the views are real. About an hour out and back is plenty — the south-shore lake walk is the specific stretch.

Lunch: Captain’s Table (if it’s open). The on-water restaurant lives at Watauga Lakeshore Resort & Marina, with a deck you can pull a boat up to. Status has been unstable since a 2023 fire at the previous operator — call ahead before driving. If it’s closed, head into Hampton for a sandwich and skip ahead to the wineries.

Afternoon: wineries. Villa Nove Vineyards (5 min) for a real tasting first. Then Watauga Lake Winery (10 min) for a more casual hour with a glass on the deck and the live music they often have on Saturdays. One person drives.

Dinner: drive to Banner Elk. Thirty minutes into North Carolina, through some of the prettiest road in the region. Stonewalls or Painted Fish Café. Both are small. Both are good. Reserve ahead.

Back home: jet tub. This is the night that ends well.

Sunday

Morning: balcony. Coffee, a book, time. Don’t pack until you absolutely have to.

Late morning: drive home, or extend. If you can stay through Monday morning, do it. The lake on a Sunday afternoon is even quieter than usual.

Seasonal notes for couples

Spring (April–May). Wildflowers, almost no other guests, mild days. The wineries are quiet — you can have the tasting room to yourselves. Mid-March can spike with college spring break but otherwise it’s almost empty. Bring layers; the nights are still cold.

Summer (June–August). Lake is fully active. Boat rentals are doable. The downside: this is also the most-booked season and you’ll need to plan further out. The fire pit feels less special at 85 degrees.

Fall (September–November). The headliner. October 10–25 is peak color and the deck view is unreal — full color in every direction. Book six months out for peak. See our fall foliage guide for the specifics. The Banner Elk dinner drive in fall is one of the best in the southeast.

Winter (December–February). The most underrated couples’ season. Snow occasionally; quiet always; the jet tub matters more. Ski day at Beech Mountain optional. Most winter weekends are bookable two to four weeks out — our winter getaway piece has the seasonal details, and our anniversary weekend playbook if you’re marking an occasion.

A few specific recommendations

Where to buy good wine on the drive in. Once you’re past Elizabethton, the only options for nice wine are the two local wineries. So stop at Watauga Vintners or any of the wine shops in downtown Elizabethton on the way through.

Best photo spot on the property. The bedroom balcony at golden hour (about 45 minutes before sunset). The light comes in low across the lake and the colors do a thing that’s worth waiting for. Set a timer.

Best restaurant for an anniversary. Stonewalls in Banner Elk. Reserve a window table. Order the trout.

Best activity if it rains. A long lazy afternoon at Villa Nove Vineyards. They have a covered patio, a woodstove on cold days, and the staff are happy to walk you through wines if you’re not in a hurry. Pair with a cheese plate.

What we don’t have

This is not a luxury resort. We don’t have a spa, a massage room, or room service. If you want those, there are nice spa hotels in Asheville and Boone.

What we have is a quiet townhouse with a view, a jet tub, and a fire pit, with two wineries down the road and a real dinner across the line. For most couples, that’s the trip.

When to book

For peak fall (October 10–25): six months ahead. For summer weekends: three months ahead. For Valentine’s Day weekend: four months ahead. For everything else: two to six weeks is usually enough.

If you’re trying to book a specific weekend that matters to you (anniversary, milestone), don’t wait. Message us with the date and we’ll tell you what’s available and what’s coming open.

Want to stay at the lake?

Our modern two-bedroom townhouse has sweeping lake and mountain views, a jet tub, and a gas fire pit on the back porch.

Common questions

What makes the townhouse couple-friendly?

Indoor jet tub, gas fireplace, gas fire pit on the porch, panoramic lake view from the bedroom balcony, no shared walls between bedrooms, and quiet hilltop setting. The queen suite with the balcony is the one couples request.

What's the best season for a couples' trip?

October for foliage and warmer days. Late February for snow and the jet tub. May for quiet and wildflowers. We've had couples come in every season and each one has its case.

Are there dinner restaurants worth driving to?

Yes. Stonewalls and Painted Fish Café in Banner Elk (30 min) are the two we recommend most. Both feel like real restaurants, not lake-town tourist food.
